The RDGA congratulates Will Thompson - a 13-year old eighth grade student from Pittsford's Barker Road Middle School - who captured his first AJGA title on April 5, winning the Junior All-Star event at Château Élan in Braselton, Georgia with a 54-hole total of even-par 213.
Thomson, a member at Oak Hill Country CLub, posted scores of 72-69-72 to win the Boys Division title by one shot over Canon Claycomb of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Brandon Mancheno of Jacksonville, Florida.
Thomson began the final day in second place, but surged ahead early in the round.
“I got off to a good start, going 2-under par through three holes,” Thomson said. “Then on the back nine I was going back and forth with Canon [Claycomb] and I was able to pull it out on No. 18.”
Thomson, who had three birdies in the final round and nine overall, credited his strong finish to his length and accuracy off the tee.
“I had a lot of good drives hitting a lot of fairways, which put me in good position for the approach shot,” Thomson said. “I’ve gained a lot of distance and consistency since I played in this tournament last year, so it was great to get the win.”
This latest accomplishment follows an outstanding year for Thomson in 2014, in which he won his second New York State Boys Championship title, as well as the Monroe County High School Tournament of Champions and the International Junior Masters in Buffalo. Later in the summer, he also became the youngest golfer ever to qualify for the U.S. Amateur.
