Past RDGA Mid Amateur Champions
Jim Scorse of Stafford is presented with the 2019 RDGA Mid Amateur Championship trophy by RDGA Executive Director Tim Vangellow after winning the title at Mendon Golf Club on August 21. Scorse won the title for the eighth time in 2019.
The RDGA Mid Amateur Championship
One of the more recent additions to the annual lineup of Rochester District Golf Association championships, the RDGA Mid Amateur Championship is open to all amateur male golfers age 25 and over (as of the beginning of each year's tournament) who are members in good standing at RDGA clubs. All contestants must have a RDGA/USGA Handicap Index supplied by the RDGA.
Patterned after the USGA's Mid Amateur, the first RDGA Mid Amateur Championship was held in 2007 as a way to provide a formal competition for local post collegeiate-age amateurs, for whom the game is an avocation, rather than a stepping stone to a professional career. The format of the event is a two-day, 36-hole, stroke play competition, conducted as two 18-hole rounds held on consecutive days.
To say that Stafford Country Club member Jim Scorse has dominated this championship is an understatement. In 2019, the five-time RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Memorial winner captured his eighth RDGA Mid Am title in the 13-year history of the competition. In 2016, Ridgemont's Ken Starkweather became just the second player (other than Scorse) to win the District Mid Am title more than once.
During the 2019 RDGA Mid Am Championship, Scorse posted rounds of 70 and 67 for a 5-under-par 137 total, finishing five shots ahead of Mike Colosi from LeRoy Country Club and six ahead of Locust Hill's Kyle Downey. Scorse proved uncatchable down the stretch, carding three birdies on the back nine during the final round on August 21.

2019 RDGA Mid Amateur Championship
In 2020, the RDGA Mid Amateur Championship visits Clifton Springs Country Club for the first time in the 14-year history of the championship. Clifton Springs has been host to many championships through the years, including three RDGA Senior Championships, two RDGA Junior Championships and one RDGA Match Play Championship.
Scheduled for August 14 and 15, competitors will tour the beautifully-maintained, 6,517-yard par 71 Championship course, which was completed and opened in 1959 - designed by the noted and prolific local golf course architect "Pete" Craig.
In addition to the RDGA Mid Amateur Championship trophy, the top five finishers - including ties - will receive exemptions into the 2021 RDGA District Championship John H. Ryan Jr. Memorial, to be hosted by the Country Club of Rochester next July.
