The road to the 2017 RDGA Junior Championship leads to Mill Creek Golf Club, above, on July 31 through August 2. Before that, the RDGA Junior Tournament Schedule tees off in late June.
With summer now in full swing, RDGA junior golfers are hitting the local links and getting ready to travel the "Road to the 2017 RDGA Junior Championships" later this month at Mill Creek Golf Club. But, between now and then, the RDGA Junior Tournament Schedule will provide plenty of playing opportunities for juniors looking to sharpen their games - and have fun along the way.
One new feature about this year's junior schedule: If you are 18 years old but not enrolled in or attending a college program, you are now eligible to enter RDGA Junior tournaments! Prior to this year, 17 was the final year of eligiblity.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2017 RDGA JUNIOR TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE:
- This summer's RDGA Junior Tournament Schedule begins with two one-day, 18-hole RDGA Junior Classic events, which are open to boys and girls, ages 12-14 (Sub Junior) and 15 to 18 (Junior), with USGA Handicaps issued by the RDGA or an RDGA Member Club. The first RDGA Junior Classic on the schedule will be hosted by Riverton Golf Club on Thursday, June 29. The second RDGA Junior Classic will be hosted by Champion Hills Country Club in Victor on Monday, July 17.
REGISTRATION for the RDGA Junior Classic at Champion Hills has CLOSED.
- Next on the junior schedule are two 9-hole Pee Wee Classic events - for boys and girls ages 7 to 11 with USGA Handicaps issued by the RDGA or an RDGA Member Club - at Buttonwood Golf Course in Spencerport on July 7 and July 21. A great way for young juniors to get their start in tournament golf, both Pee Wee events feature a brief instructional clinic and lunch, followed by nine holes of golf. Registration for these events closes on July 14.
- The road to the 2017 RDGA Junior Championships next visits Timber Ridge Golf Club on West Ridge Road in Brockport on July 18, for the RDGA Boys Sub-Junior and Junior Championship Qualifiers. With the exception of the defending RDGA Junior Boys Champion (Jason Lohwater) and defending RDGA Sub Junior Boys Champion (Graham Gaenzle), any Sub-Junior- or Junior-age boy golfer hoping to play in the District Junior Championships must first play in the Qualifier at Timber Ridge. (Pee Wee Boys and all Junior Girls may register for the RDGA Junior Championships at any time.) Those players who successfully qualify at Timber Ridge will be automatically entered into the RDGA Junior Championships at Mill Creek. Registration for this event closes on July 13.
- Mill Creek Golf Club in Churchville hosts the final stop on the road to the 2017 RDGA Junior Championships on July 31 through August 2, when the top-qualifying boys and girls will compete for the District Junior, Sub-Junior and Pee Wee titles. The Junior Boys and Sub Junior Boys will square off in rounds of single-elimination match play to decide the title, while Junior Girls will compete in 36 holes of stroke play over two days and Sub Junior Girls will compete in 27 holes of stroke play over three days. The Pee Wee competition will also feature 18 holes of stroke play, with nine holes each day. Registration for this event closes on July 25.
